Production: Flexible production at the competence centre for BMW X models.
Start of production of the new BMW X3 was preceded by a substantial extension of the BMW Spartanburg plant situated in the US Federal State of South Carolina. The new Sports Activity Vehicle is now built there along with the BMW X5 and the BMW X6. As a result, the BMW Spartanburg plant, which was in put into operation in 1994, has strengthened its significance as a competence centre for BMW X models within the BMW Group's global production network.
For the production of the new BMW X3, factory structures were sustainably enhanced and a new assembly hall was built based on state-of-the-art production and logistics principles. The result is a new vehicle assembly facility located in the north of the factory premises linked by bodywork conveyors. Furthermore, within existing structures, both bodyshell production and the paint shop were comprehensively modernised and expanded.
Due to the extension measures involving an investment volume of around 750 million US dollars, annual production capacity at the BMW Spartanburg plant has risen to between 200,000 and 240,000 vehicles. The total ground area of the production location has grown to 370,000 square metres. In all, the BMW Group has already invested more than 4.2 billion Euros in Spartanburg.
Innovative painting process.
The production of the new BMW X3 incorporates for the first time the innovative IPP Integrated Painting Process, facilitating perfect paint quality, whilst at the same time increasing the output of the paint shop. Further advantages are a significant reduction in toxic emissions and the amount of waste water. It was even possible to reduce energy requirement by around 35 percent.
Flexible production and logistics structures enhance efficiency.
Production structures inside the assembly hall built for the production of the new BMW X3 are based on principles which have already been tried and tested at the BMW Leipzig plant. The so-called finger structure facilitates particularly flexible control of production sequences and capacities. At the BMW Spartanburg plant, logistic processes are additionally integrated into the structure of the new assembly hall. The new logistic processes enhance the flexibility of assembly and are at the same time highly efficient due to the minimisation of handling stages and maximisation of direct and sequential delivery volumes.
Most current production and logistic processes, which were developed by the BMW Group within the framework of the Value-Adding Production Systems and result in optimised precision and efficiency, are utilised, for example, during the assembly of doors and the manufacture of front and rear ends. All production processes are subject to stringent, globally applicable BMW Group quality and safety standards.
Sustainable production: CO2 emissions significantly reduced.
The BMW Spartanburg plant is also exemplary with regard to the conservation of resources. The new BMW X3 is built at a plant which is environmentally certified according to ISO 14001 and which gains 50 percent of its energy requirement from methane gas obtained from the biological decomposition of waste materials at a waste dump located approximately 16 kilometres away.
In 2009, the production of energy from methane gas was increased even further. Two new, highly efficient gas turbine generators with an output of 11 000 kW secure almost 30 percent of the plant's electricity supply.
According to calculations made by the American EPA Environmental Protection Agency, the reduction of CO2 emissions achieved through sustainable energy production corresponds to the planting of more than 9,300 hectares of forest - an area approximately thirty times the size of New York's Central Park. Thanks to this environmental initiative, the BMW Spartanburg plant has already won several national and federal state accolades, including the EPA's "Green Power" award.
